Union Square: A Square for All Seasons

Union Square. A San Franciscan icon. An everyday place for locals. With hundreds, or thousands, of people passing through Union Square every hour, it is the perfect location for many activities, large and small, and here’s our top picks.

Ice Skating

One of the most picturesque times of the year is Christmas. Surrounding stores decorate their store fronts to bring the holiday cheer. The 80-foot Christmas tree dazzles with its while lights and brilliant red tree topper, a star. The streets swarm with holiday shoppers. The ice rink brings people out of the homes and onto the rink for some holiday spirit. Despite the above-freezing temperatures, the ice rick is the real star. It offers people winter and holiday cheer in 50-degree weather, which undoubtedly brings laughter and hand-holding in attempt to stay standing.

Flash Mobs

Flash mob (noun): a large public gathering at which people perform an unusual or seemingly random act and then disperse, typically organized by means of the Internet or social media.

Whether you participate in a flash mob or act as a spectator, Union Square is the place to see one. Sprinkled throughout the year, flash mobs can draw quite the crowd and talent. If you want to be part of it, check out the Bay Area Flash Mob group.

People Watching

Although people watching can be done from anywhere, Union Square is the prime location due to its high pedestrian traffic. Each time you go to Union Square you can experience a different side of San Francisco, but it depends on what you are looking for. We can say, with a doubt, that people watching can help you learn about the city and its culture.
